Software Leasing Trend Slams Baan Earnings
On October 21, the Baan Company announced a larger-than-expected loss of $25M. Baan's stock price tumbled more than 10% after the loss more than tripled Wall Street's prediction of losses between $8.2M and $1.4M. Revenue for the quarter was $143M, compared to $195M in the same period last year. Sales of new software fell 59% to $36M for the recent quarter, from last year's $86.6M. Baan cited the market's move toward leasing rather than buying software as one reason for its sagging revenue.

Another Type Of Virus Hits The World (And Gets Microsoft No Less)
A number of anti-virus vendors, including Trend Micro and Computer Associates, have warned of a virus with a new approach. It is known variously as QAZ.TROJAN or QAZ.WORM, and was officially renamed to W32.HLLW.Qaz.A in September. The virus enters via unprotected shared drives and usually replaces the Notepad.Exe application, although there have been occasions where Notepad was not the victim. The virus then provides a backdoor to outside intruders, giving them in effect remote control over the computer that has been infected. This analysis contains some suggestions to protect your machines.

HP “Medals” In U.S. PC Olympics
In the U.S. desktop PC market, Hewlett Packard and Gateway have been closely embroiled for the #3 position in the market. This trend will not continue. TEC forecasts a widening lead for HP throughout 2000.

Wrapping Up FOSS Predictions for 2010 with a Look Back » The TEC Blog
relation to our demand trend stats. Let’s start with the OStatic blog in which Sean Dean thinks that “more big companies will adopt/accelerate open source strategies.” He believes there will be increased enterprise adoption of open source next year (and thus, I presume, increased demand). What I find interesting is the nature of his justification. Dean points to Android’s success as a key factor leading toward accelerated adoption. OK, sounds reasonable. As a mobile platform, Android (Google’s

Carrying the Can: Consumerization and Enterprise Mobility
There is an increasing trend among employees toward using their personal mobile device for fulfilment of their work commitments. While this appears to bring many benefits for the employee while, on the face of it, reducing upfront costs for employers, it does introduce significant on-going costs and risks for the organisation. However, with many appealing mobile consumer devices being offered, the trend is likely to increase. Organizations need to work out suitable strategies and policies to manage this complex and hybrid situation in the best interests of both themselves and their employees.
